Library

The School Library is open daily for pupils, staff and parents. We have a fine selection of books including children’s literature, teenage and adult fiction as well as non-fiction books. We have Afrikaans, Xhosa and Latin literature as well as Rudolf Steiner books.

Children from Grade three and up have a library class once a week. Care is taken by teachers and the Librarian to cultivate a life-long enthusiasm for reading and studying.

We have a full Media centre for High School pupils, which includes computers to aid in their research, as well as facilities to listen to Music, or watch Videos or DVD’s which the teachers use to enhance their lessons.

The Readathon 2007 was organized by the Library;lots of photographs...

The Rainbow Puppet Theatre

STEP INTO THE WORLD OF PUPPETS,
AND TALES AS OLD AS TIME ITSELF

See current events for programme details

Situated at the Constantia Waldorf School, tucked away in the Kindergarten building is the only permanent Puppet Theatre in South Africa. The Rainbow Puppet Theatre has been performing to the public every Saturday morning at 10am and 11.15 am for 18 years (on 14th May 2010), although it was intended for the pupils of the Waldorf School. Our artistically painted theatre has a permanent team of five puppeteers complimented with full stage lighting, beautiful glove, rod and shadow puppets and even live music. We can seat up to 60 guests!

Although our shows are widely regarded as entertainment for children, adults who come into contact with it soon fall under its enchanted spell. It is an ongoing source of merriment to the theatre's puppeteers to see the totally absorbed and happy faces not only of the children, but also of the parents, grand-parents, aunties and uncles who attend. One of the reasons we find the puppet shows so fascinating is that they remind us of a dimension of experience that is not altogether of this world. Also, many of the stories are very old, and originated when the world was much younger.

Aside from a few other stories, our Rainbow Puppet Theatre usually performs well-known Grimm's Fairy Tales such as 'Snow White and Rose Red’, ‘Sleeping Beauty' and 'Hansel and Gretel'. We have about 16 different stories altogether which rotates on a monthly basis. Many people believe that the brothers Grimm actually wrote the famous stories with which their names are linked, but they simply collected them from old story-tellers who remembered them. The stories have passed down through countless generations by word of mouth. Children still have a connection to this story-realm and so connect deeply with them.

Not only do we perform Puppet Shows every Saturday, we also offer shows for Birthday Parties. The Rainbow Puppet Theatre is the perfect place to enjoy a puppet show with your friends and play in our beautiful gardens. We also have a mobile Puppet Theatre for home birthdays and functions.

We have newly started a tradition of Carols by Candlelight accompanied by ‘The Christmas Rose’ over advent  and an Easter Planting Activity accompanied by ‘The Brave Little Easter Rabbit’ over Easter... The Rainbow Puppet Theatre also performs shows at the Night Market on the last Friday of every month (during term time).
